It’s hard to learn when you’re hungry.
Schools help us towards our goal of ending childhood hunger. They work to ensure that kids have enough to eat so that they can focus on learning and growing with their friends. Research shows that starting the school day by eating breakfast can lead to higher test scores, calmer classrooms, fewer trips to the nurse, and better attendance. Around 91,000 students per day across our service area ate free or reduced-price breakfast at their schools for the 2022-23 school year.
In Pennsylvania, breakfast is free for all kids for the 2023-24 school year, and we’re committed to helping schools maximize this benefit for their students. Our Child Nutrition Outreach Coordinators offer many different types of support to schools throughout our service area. Support includes Impact Grants, technical assistance for all child nutrition programs and help transitioning to the Community Eligibility Provision or to alternative breakfast models that make breakfast more accessible for students.
