The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal program that offers nutritious meals and snacks to eligible children and adults at child care centers, daycare homes, adult daycare centers, after-school programs and emergency shelters. The CACFP allows children to develop and grow with a focus on health and wellness.
Each year, this program helps millions of children and adults access healthy meals and quality care in their communities. According to the Food Research and Action Center, 2 billion meals and snacks were served to 4.5 million children in child care centers, family care home, and afterschool programs in 2018.
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank sponsors meals and snacks throughout the school year as part of the CACFP. This program serves more than 2,200 kids across 40 at-risk after-school program sites in Allegheny County.
