Government Shutdown – Update

Posted on January 25, 2019 by Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

Agreement has been reached to temporarily suspend the government shutdown. Government workers will go back to work knowing that for three weeks they can once again count on receiving pay for their work. When back pay will be received and missed insurance payments will be sorted out is yet to be determined.

As workers and their families begin to dig out from bills, we know they will need our continued support. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is committed to being a neighbor our neighbors can count on.

All currently scheduled distributions will continue as planned and special supports for federal employees will remain in place for one full month following the official reopening of government.

We remain deeply concerned and are closely monitoring negotiations to permanently reopen government.

Will funding for SNAP (food stamps) in March be included in the agreement? What about contract employees who have missed up to 10% of their annual pay and who are ineligible for back pay? What happens if agreement isn’t reached before February 15?

Many important questions remain unanswered. The Food Bank, thanks to our supporters, will be ready to respond.
