This Hunger Action Month, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has a special appreciation for the volunteers that make the fight to end hunger possible.
Everyone needs nutritious food to thrive. Yet, tens of millions of people in the United States – including more than 236,560 individuals in the Food Bank’s service area – face hunger. This year, in honor of Hunger Action Month, we want to recognize the dedication of the volunteers that help ensure everyone, no matter race, background or zip code, has access to the food and resources needed to thrive. Last year, 6,900 volunteers shared more than 71,040 hours of their time to better our mission. We cannot thank volunteers enough for all that they do for the Food Bank.
Whether sorting produce in the Volunteer Engagement Center; acting as shopping buddies in The Market; loading groceries into vehicles at a distribution; or helping with mailings in our office, each volunteer makes a profound impact on our organization. In the past fiscal year, volunteers sorted 324,000 pounds of produce in the VEC, served 102,000 families at Distributions and served 12,376 households in The Market. Volunteers play a vital role in our mission – leveraging the power of community to achieve lasting solutions to hunger and its root causes.
Volunteers join Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank from corporate, religious, community or school groups, or as individuals looking to make a difference. With the ever pressing need to provide food for our neighbors, we encourage current volunteers to continue their commitment to ending hunger, and welcome new volunteers who are looking to further their commitment to the community. Currently, our greatest need for volunteers is in The Market, our on-site food pantry, that distributed nearly one million pounds of groceries and reached 12,376 individuals in the last year.
This Hunger Action Month, we are reminded of how important our dedicated and inspiring volunteers are to the Food Bank, and we thank you for choosing to commit your time to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Distributing 42 million meals annually, providing 12.5 million pounds of produce annually and serving nearly 429,500 people annually across our 11-county region is not possible without the help and support from our amazing network of volunteers.
At the core of Hunger Action Month are the people whose actions are the driving force behind the work the Food Bank is able to accomplish – our volunteers. Thank you, this month, and every month, for your support.
As a volunteer or in honor of our volunteers, we invite you to take a step to get us closer to a region where no one is hungry. Visit pittsburghfoodbank.org/clearview and help us end hunger. Donations will be matched by a generous donation from Clearview, up to $10,000. Double your donation today!
