Розуміння продовольчої безпеки

Food insecurity is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as the lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life. Data from the USDAindicatesthat most people living in poverty are food secure andmostpeople facing hunger live above the federal poverty line ($32,150 for a family of four as of Січень 2025).

It is critical that we continue to educate and bring awareness of the complex nature of food insecurity. We operatewith the knowledge that food insecurity is not primarily the result of personal choices. We know that there are families that are one paycheck away or one major life altering crises that can cause a family to miss a meal or go hungry. Other conditions such as unemployment, under-employment, a major health issue(s) that limit one’s ability to live self-sufficiently, homelessness, lack of support, substance abuse, criminal records, language barriers, geographic access, etc. can intensify food insecurity.

In addition to these conditions, social inequalities may create and perpetuate the conditions that sustain food insecurity.Such conditions intentionally or unintentionally pull needed resources away from communities where residents in that community have the inability to access social/community support systems, such as employment, healthcare, transportation, housing, neighborhood safety, etc.

These social, economic, and environmental conditions can have a lasting effect and shape people’s lives, affect their health outcomes and contribute to the inability for their family to succeed and thrive.
