Belle’s Story

Belle and her husband have spent their lives working hard, but aging on a fixed income has pushed their budget to the breaking point. A single‑dollar increase in her Social Security check caused her to lose her SNAP benefits entirely, a sudden cut that left her without the support she relied on to buy groceries. “I made $1 too much…Then they took [SNAP] off me, and I haven’t been able to get anything since,” she says.

Last year, Belle was wheelchair‑bound and living in a nursing home. Today, she’s home with her husband, who is navigating cancer and emphysema. Their medical needs are constant, and their income is limited. Food shouldn’t be another source of fear.

Through determination, Belle has regained enough mobility to drive again, a milestone that allows her to visit The Market, the Food Bank’s onsite pantry, twice a month. “I’m happy with soup, rice, spaghetti, macaroni…whatever they’ve got, I can use. I get this and I appreciate it.”

Belle’s story is one of thousands across our region. When SNAP benefits are reduced or cut off entirely, older adults on fixed incomes are often the first to feel the impact. And when that happens, the Food Bank becomes a lifeline ensuring neighbors like Belle don’t have to choose between medication, housing, and food.
