At Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, we believe that every act of generosity is a story—a story of hope, partnership, and the power of community. Today, we are honored to shine a light on The Heinz Endowments, whose extraordinary $500,000 gift is helping us meet the surging need for food assistance today, bringing nourishment to thousands of families and students across our region.
The Heinz Endowments are one of the largest and most influential philanthropic organizations in the United States, with a goal to help grow an exemplary, sustainable Pittsburgh region where everyone prospers and belongs. Their work spans arts & culture, civic participation, climate, environment & health, community & economic development, food systems, veterans, and workforce development. Rooted in the legacy of Howard Heinz and Vira I. Heinz, the Endowments have shaped the region for generations, investing in initiatives that foster equity, opportunity, and resilience.
The Heinz Endowments’ support for food systems is not just about providing meals—it’s about ensuring that every child, every family, and every neighbor has the resources they need to thrive. Since their first gift to the Food Bank in 1996, The Heinz Endowments have given more than $1.4 million to support our mission, with 25 gifts over three decades. Their giving is both consistent and visionary—responding to urgent needs while investing in long-term solutions.
This year, as southwestern Pennsylvania faces a perfect storm of hardship—federal funding cuts, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, delays in SNAP benefits and changes in eligibility—The Heinz Endowments stepped forward with urgency and compassion. Their $500,000 gift is helping the Food Bank provide “funds on account” to school pantries and hundreds of partner agencies, ensuring they can access our wholesale inventory at no cost.
The impact of The Heinz Endowments’ gift is immediate and profound. For school pantries, the funds mean that students in 30 schools will have reliable access to healthy food for their whole families. For partner agencies, the support arrives at a critical moment—helping them secure food through the holidays, when demand is highest and resources are most strained.
This gift also strengthens our ability to distribute fresh produce, dairy, meat, and non-meat protein, replacing millions of pounds of food lost to federal program cuts. It ensures that our partners can continue to offer nutritious food to families and students who need it most.
For The Heinz Endowments, giving is more than charity—it’s partnership, impact, and building a region where everyone belongs. We are deeply grateful to The Heinz Endowments for their vision, generosity, and unwavering commitment to our region. Their support of the Food Bank has helped us weather crises, innovate innovative programs, and reach more neighbors than ever before. The Heinz Endowments’ gift is not just an investment in food assistance—it is an act of compassion, resilience, and hope in a challenging time.
As we move forward, we invite others to join The Heinz Endowments in support of our mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy, every action helps build a community where everyone has access to the food and resources they need to thrive.
Thank you, Heinz Endowments, for fueling hope and nourishing our community—today and for generations to come.
