Candy’s Story

Candy could probably be a contestant on the Price is Right by the way she knows grocery prices. A chef by trade, Candy spent her professional years working in restaurants and grocery stores. After staring at food prices all day, she learned couponing could significantly help with her grocery bill.

“I used to do a lot of couponing years ago. It’s a good thing I kind of stocked up on the aluminum foil because it’s really outrageous. If you go to buy a roll aluminum foil, I mean anything that you go buy today, I mean, you just have to watch the sales- people have to be strategic.”

Today, Candy and her husband are both retired on a fixed income and lowering the grocery bill isn’t as easy as couponing.

“My husband has a pension and we both have our social security and that’s all we get a month. I mean, my husband’s a retired coal miner.”

She says even though they did everything right in their careers and own their home outright, their fixed income is so tight, they started visiting pantries and signing up for senior boxes. It’s one of the reasons Candy was so excited to hear Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was launching a drive-up distribution in Greene in partnership with Corner Cupboard.

“I mean, it’s a God’s blessing because we see this happening down around Allegheny County and Pittsburgh. And I’m thinking, “Well, wait a minute, they leave out [a drive up distribution in] Greene.” And it’s just a blessing that they’re able to provide.
