Every September, communities across the country come together for Hunger Action Month, a nationwide movement led by Feeding America food banks to raise awareness about hunger and inspire action. Here in southwestern Pennsylvania, Hunger Action Month is more than an awareness campaign. It’s a reminder that ending hunger requires all of us working together.
At its core, Hunger Action Month is a reminder that meaningful change starts with individual action. Every hour volunteered, every dollar donated, every story shared and every voice raised helps build a stronger, more food-secure community. When those efforts come together, their impact reaches far beyond what any one person could accomplish alone. That is THE POWER OF YOU!
At Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, we see the reality of hunger every day. We meet parents stretching grocery budgets beyond their limits, seniors navigating rising costs on fixed incomes and working families struggling to keep up with the increasing cost of housing, utilities, healthcare and food. Hunger affects people in every county, every community and every demographic throughout our 11-county service area.
While food insecurity has remained persistently high in recent years, the challenges facing local families have become even more difficult. Changes to federal nutrition programs, uncertainty around food assistance funding and reductions in supportive resources have put additional pressure on households already struggling to make ends meet. For many families, these changes have arrived at the same time as continued inflation and rising living expenses, creating impossible choices between paying bills and putting food on the table.
As these challenges grow, so does the need for community action.
The good news is that our region has always responded with compassion, generosity and determination. Every day, volunteers, donors, partner organizations and advocates help ensure our neighbors have access to the food and resources they need to thrive. That collective effort is what makes our mission possible.
But Hunger Action Month is also a reminder that there is still work to do.
Food insecurity is not just a statistic. It’s the parent skipping dinner so their child can eat. It’s the senior deciding whether to fill a prescription or buy groceries. It’s the worker holding down multiple jobs and still struggling to provide enough food for their family. Behind every number is a real person who deserves the dignity and security of consistent access to nutritious food.
That is why The Power of You is so important.
The Power of You unites volunteers, donors, advocates, neighbors and supporters around a common goal: building a stronger community where everyone has access to the food they need. Through individual actions, we create collective impact.

This September, we invite you to join us. Volunteer. Donate. Advocate. Share your story. Encourage others to get involved.
Because when neighbors stand together, hope grows stronger. When communities take action, lives change. And when you choose to act, you become part of the movement to end hunger.
That’s the Power of You.
